Before choosing a logistics / courier / delivery / cargo partner, there are a few points that one needs to understand;
1. The type of product to be sent.
Define the type of product you need to move from one point to another. For eg: consumer goods, fmcg, pharma goods, etc.
2. Is the package hazardous?
If yes, then one needs to provide MSDS (Material Safety Document Sheet) to the service provider and inform them prior to booking a vehicle.
3. Weight per unit / box / unit of measurement, its dimension and No. of boxes to be shipped.
Define the gross weight of your shipment so that you get a clear idea on what type of vehicle should be chosen, no. of vehicles required, total charge to transport the material.
4. Is the consignment fragile?
This is important to define the terms of material handling, as rough handling could damage fragile materials.
5. Is the product perishable / temperature controlled?
If yes, the service provider may arrange a special vehicle which won’t allow the temperature to go beyond the defined temperature.
These are the few basic points one needs to be cleared before deciding a good Logistics Service provider for their business.
